WATERHOUSE, Richard ( 1832-1876) Confederate general. At Milliken's Bend, Louisiana, on August 18, 1862, he won high commendations from Henry Eustace McCulloch for leading a determined charge against Federal troops within artillery range of Union gunboats. McCulloch reported, "not only by a gallant and desperate charge over the levee" but by driving the enemy "to the very brink of the river and within short and direct range of the gunboats of the enemy." After transfer to William Read Scurry's brigade, he fought at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill during the Red River Campaign in spring 1864. General E. Kirby Smith, who was commanding the Trans-Mississippi Department, was impressed with Waterhouse and he appointed Waterhouse Brigadier General to rank from April 30, 1864. The promotion was not confirmed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis until March 17, 1865 and by the Confederate Senate until the 18th, the last day the legislators were in session before the government collapsed. War-date Confederate general’s Autograph Letter Signed by Richard Waterhouse, 2pp. quarto, Camp Wright near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, April 12, 1863, it reads in part: “...I would be very glad to see you all, but do not expect to have that pleasure soon, you should not, allow yourself to be to anxious on that subject nor to suffer any uneasiness about me, but do the best you can for your self & children and probably this unholy war will sooner or later come to a close on honorable terms to our beloved country and friends & families will be once more united and peace & prosperity spread their wings over a happy country. I do not expect to be able to visit home soon, as I do not consider I would be doing my duty to leave, as I am in fine health and able for duty and plenty to employ all my time. I expect from what I can learn that we will remain on this river for several months to come, though I would much prefer active service. It may be possible that we maygot to Missiouri this summer. I understand that Genl Price will move in that direction with the cavalry and if he should I feel sure that all the troops on this river will soon follow as it will require all the troops we have here to prosicture a successfull campaign in that direction. I rec’d Willies letter in which he says he will be up by the 1st of next month. i think he will be very well pleased with a camp life but I do not know how well he will stand it as he is rather delicate though I have several small boys of from 14 to 16 years of age who have made good soldiers and have been in good health most of the time...The health of this army is very much improved, we have but little sickness here now. The men are in better health & spirits than they have been since we have been in this state...” Repairs, else near very good condition.
