A good war-date Confederate officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a North Carolinian officer in Co. A, 1st North Carolina Light Battery to his wife, "Petersburg, Va., June 7, 1862" on the casualties from the battle of Seven Pines, in part: "…we are now under marching orders…[for] Drewry's Bluff nine miles from Richmond…I saw a large number of the wounded from Richmond. Our men are suffering and we have lost a large number. Capt. Harts' company was nearly all wounded. I hope the Lord will bless our arms again…Elam Wolf is killed also Blankenship from Steel Creek. I have no horse yet and may be I will have to buy some when I go home for Capt. [Thomas H.] Brem & officers. I was afraid to venture home for I run the risk of being cashiered & dismissed from service…the struggle is becoming desperate…this is a fine looking place though everything is gone in the way of goods and prices are very high…I hope…the Yankees at Richmond…".
