A good Confederate surgeon's battle letter, 2pp folio, written by Surgeon Edward A. O. Ware [POW Antietam], 23rd Georgia, Richmond, Va., July 4, 1862, in part: "…I learned yesterday that Harrison was killed dead on the field, being shot through the head…he never breathed after the ball struck him…some of the poor fellows that have been brought into the City last few days are mangled & torn & suffer agonies before they die…it is an awful thing to see a poor soldier with a leg or arm torn from his body witnessing in the intensity of his suffering until death kindly interposes…William came into the city…in company with some friend and procured a good but plain coffin and burried him at a church this side [of] the battle field. I knew that William would do all he could…as the battle is over I will try and get permission to go down to the church…find his grave & mark it with a marble head piece until his remains can be carried home…".
