A good war-date Confederate officer's letter with postal cover, 3pp., 4to, written by Major Philip H. Powers, 1st Virginia Cavalry, "Culpeper Ct House (VA), April 3, 1862," in part: "…I rode to Genl Stuart's Hd Qrs near Brandy Station in the fine new house of James Barbour. I managed to see many of my old friends. Visited the Clark cavalry…I am ordered for the present to fix my quarters here. Major Ball and myself and employees have a Camp office…I know I shall experience many difficulties and trials but I hope to endure them…The dyspepsia is still bothering me and our bread is awful…I saw a Baltimore Sun yesterday of the 28th which contained a list of the prisoners taken in Jackson's fight. Among them was Bushrod Washington and George Washington was among the names of the wounded in Winchester. Several of the Barton's were named as either wounded or prisoners. I know nothing of our movements but hardly think the enemy will advance on this line…" The stamp mostly removed from the cover, else VG overall.
