Original $500 coupon bond issued by the Treasury Department of the CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, issued in Richmond, March 2, 1863. Fine vignette of a Confederate soldier warming his hands over a fire.Printed by Archer & Daly of Richmond, Virginia. Printed on distinctive pink paper and includes 7 unredeemed coupons. Reference: Criswell's "Confederate and Southern States Bonds," Criswell # 121. This is a rare example of a TRANS-MISSISSIPPI ISSUE with endorsement on face"ISSUED AT HOUSTON TEXAS" with signature of CSA Treasury agent. After the capture of Vicksburg by the forces under General U.S. Grant, the Union controlled the Mississippi River thus effectively cutting the Confederacy in two. Bonds issued by the Confederate treasury in the Trans-Mississippi Department then required a counter signature of the CSA depositary agent in Shreveport of Houston. Full margins, fine overall condition and great for display. One of the most collectible Confederate bonds with the Texas depositary endorsement.
