Original Confederate document DESCRIPTIVE LIST AND ACCOUNT OF PAY AND CLOTHING listing pay and allowances due to PRIVATE ROBERT A. LENTZ, "DIED OF THE EFFECT OF WOUNDS RECEIVED AT THE BATTLE OF MALVERN HILL." Statement that private Lentz was due "three months and seventeen days pay" signed by CAPTAIN JOHN A. RAMSAY, COMMANDING BATTERY D, 10TH NORTH CAROLINA STATE TROOPS. Fine original Confederate document, signed and dated "Camp Taylor near Lindsay Depot C.R.R. Va," (Lindsay depot was 5 miles from Gordonsville on the Virginia Central Railroad.) December 31, 1863. PRIVATE ROBERT A. LENTZ was 25 years old when he enlisted at Salisbury, North Carolina on March 19, 1862 and was mustered into Company D, NORTH CAROLINA 1ST LIGHT ARTILLERY. He was badly wounded at the BATTLE OF MALVERN HILL on July 1, 1862 and died at Richmond, Virginia on July 6, 1862. CAPTAIN JOHN ANDREW RAMSAY was from Rowan County and was commissioned into D Company, North Carolina 1st Light Artillery on May 8, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 16, 1861. He was wounded on August 8, 1862 at the Battle of Second Manassas. Ramsay was promoted to Captain on September 7, 1863. On the surrender of General Johnston's Army at the end of the war, he was paroled on June 19, 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina. THE 1ST REGIMENT, NORTH CAROLINA ARTILLERY was also known as the 10TH REGIMENT NORTH CAROLINA VOLUNTEERS. It was organized at Raleigh, North Carolina, in June, 1861, and was composed of five light companies (A,C,D,E, and I) and five heavy companies (B,F,G,H, and K). The light companies served in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
