A good Southern home front Confederate officer's wife's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Elmira Jane Hooper [Word, 1840-1864, Monroe County, Miss.], June 3, 1863 written to Sarah Jane Hooper Ware, in part: "…Mr. Hooper did not get to come home to see me. He & I were both disappointed. He telegraphed me to meet him at Meridian but I did not get it until to late…he thought something was the matter & he sent his negro boy home with his trunk…he was to let me know when to send the boy back but he was ordered to Jackson & has been moving ever since. So I received a letter from him the other night saying that I was not to send the boy as could not find him…his regiment was not in the fight…the news came today that Grant's army was leaving & that Johnston was in hot pursuit…I was sorry…when I heard Mr. Hooper was ordered to Miss…I would rather have him remain in safety & far away than…in danger…I am so sorry that he sent his boy homer it he gets wounded he will need him…the repulses we gave the enemies were great at Vicksburg. Johnston's troops have had no fight since the one at Jackson & Raymond & I hope & fancy that they may be whipped. Brother's regiment is reported to be their also…sister fanny…her husband is a surgeon in Vicksburg…may God protect those that are dear to us & shield them from all danger. There is no truth as the Yankees coming down here…but they may come soon as they always come when we think their is no danger…". VG
