A good war-date Confederate officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by 1st Lt. Thomas Foster Hooper, Co. I, 29th Ga. Vols., General Walker's Brigade, [outside Vicksburg, Miss., ca. June 1863], reading, in part: "It will be impossible for you to send me any provisions or a negroe as I am at least fifty miles from any rail road and as for telegraph lines there is none…I came off from Sarah's in such great haste that I did not have time to attend to your commands. I could not have brought the factory [?] no way. I have very little baggage with me only 1 suit cloths, 2 pr. socks, 2 pr. drawers…and I am often tempted to throw them away. We have no tents…I know nothing about the Yankees, they are reported to be about one hundred thousand strong. They are all between us and Vicksburg…our Brigade and a portion of another fought about 30 thousand of the rascals about two hours. They killed and wounded but very few of our men. We were all delighted to get to the brigade and get under Genl. Walker again. Our Regt. was under Genl. Gist from S. C. for five or six days. No one liked him that covets his own ease to much…our men all like Genl. Walker and have every confidence in him. He is decidedly a brave man and wanted to fight about 50 thousand the other day with out 10 thousand. Other Genls thought it to hazardous and…did not fight …the enemy must be driven from this country - and Vicksburg must be held if not twill be the worst blow that could be struck us…tell your Pa that I am very much obliged to him for offering me another boy [slave] but have no use for one now. He would only be in my way. The only thing is he might help me if I am wounded…I will write if I want one…". Not signed, but family genealogy identifies the author as Lt. Hooper. VG
