A great war-date partly-printed Confederate officer's promotion document, 1p. 4to., "Confederate States of America, War Department", Richmond, [Va.], Nov. 10, 1863" appointing Samuel S. Owen first lieutenant and adjutant in the 2nd Mississippi Infantry as of May 2, 1863. Signed by Secretary of War JAMES A. SEDDON (1815-1880). Owen enlisted in the 2nd Mississippi as a sergeant in 1862. His regiment served throughout the war in the Army of Northern Virginia and during the battle of Gettysburg were in the brigade commanded by Jeff Davis' brother where they sustained nearly fifty percent casualties. From the military archive of a New York artilleryman. No doubt this document was found by him on the battlefield or in a rebel camp. A Confederate forage voucher was mounted to the verso of the appointment for preservation years ago. Overall VG
