Pair of Autograph Letters Signed by Private T.B. McClendon, Co. 'E' of the 7th Texas Cavalry, and includes: ALS, 2p. quarto, Natchitoches[sic], Louisiana, May 11, 1863, in part: "...All the company as far as I know are in good health. Most of the company is with Captain Kirksey somewhere on the Sabine River under Colonel Green. We have been seperated ever since the fight at New Iberia. We expect a fight every day. The Yankees are marching up the river. We are looking for them tonight. It is intended to fight them at this place I think. Anyhow, they are making prepartations for a battle. It is said we have about 17,000 troops here. It is reported the Yankees are about 50,000. If they have that many, I don't know how the battle will go. I expect that we will have some hard fighting to do. We had a fight with them a few days ago. We fought them about 5 hours and then we had to give back. We retreated about 6 miles and stopped and there was about 7,000 of them run in among us that night and they tried to cut us off at a bridge though we beat them to the bridge, and as we commenced crossing the bridge, they commenced firing on us with their cannon. Some of us went across teh bridge and some through the woods...There are no more than 500 of us. We never had the saddles of our horses for 2 weeks. There was one time while we was down in that country that we never slept any for 3 days and 2 nights. We have retreated about 200 miles. Our men are completely worn out. The Yanks are mounting all of their Infantry as they pass throug the country. There is no chance to get a horse in that country at all. The Arkansas troops are here, but I have not seen any of them. Joe Tullo's company, I am told, went with them..." Mouse chew at bottom, else Good...plus; Autograph Letter by McClendon, 1p. folio, Caliosim Post, Lousiana, August 21, 1864, in part: "..There is a report that we will be ordered to Arkansas with General Magruder though it is only a rumor. We have not got it from Head Quarters yet, and it may not be so. I hope it is. I think that I will be at home in about 30 days again, or I hope so at least....A.S. Turner's substitute has not got here yet. I must close...Yours until death..." About Good. (2 items)
