Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Private John H. Purcell, Company "D," 87th Virginia Militia Infantry, 2pp., 8vo, with postal cover bearing Richmond cds but lacking stamp, "Camp Lee," to his wife in Red Oak Grove, Charlotte County, Virginia, in part: "We have been out of the breast works for two weeks but as yet have been in no battle…It is said that Genl Lee has fallen back ten or twelve miles. No uneasiness seems to prevail on account of it. All seem satisfied that Lee has accomplished what he has said. I hear firing this morning at Chaffin's or Drewry's Bluff. I suppose the firing is at those places as I do not know any other places where no guns are as large as the ones I hear. We are now at the Mechanicsville Turnpike at the breast works…It is said we whipped the whipped the Yankees & took their guns from them at Chester on Saturday & some prisoners. Indeed the news from all points is very cheering. North Georgia is somewhat obscure. But don't we suffer. I do wish the war would end…". Very good.
