A truly touching war-date Southern belle's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Hattie Gettinger, Richmond, [Va.], June 10, 1864, in part: "…[I] got one of yours (per flag of truce, hope for another by next boat…have some sad news to tell you. Kirk Hammond was killed about 3 weeks ago. Shot in 3 places, brought to a hospital here where he died. We followed his remains to Hollywood Cemetery. Howard was so distressed. He loved him as a brother. Jock Harrison is here with some flesh wound. I got to see him frequently [and] is doing well. Billy Delashmutt is at Cousin Williams', badly wounded but is doing well. Both Cousin Wm's boys are well…Willy Burkhart rode in from camp last week…Billy Oden was struck by [a] piece of shell, not hurt much…Mrs. McS…y's son Jim is a prisoner…Adjutant Daniels is mortally wounded tis thought…". With its original transmittal cover showing that it was not postmarked until a month later at Old Point Comfort, Va. VG
