A good war-date Confederate officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Col. Ervine P. Jones, 2nd South Carolina, Richmond, Va., June 12, 1864 to a certain Thompson Earle, in part: "…greenbacks are worth now 15 for one…soon the sale will be prohibited by law. The last funds sent on by me to officers was in sterling…purchased in Charleston…I have declined to send any more money until I hear from them. They advised me to send no more money. That they were not permitted to buy anything. I have funds mow in my hands to buy Greenbacks for the Capt sent in to him by his brother John L. Leaphart of Columbia. The capt. is a special friend for whom I have the highest regard. He was quartermaster in my regiment and officiated with me on my staff for sometime. He is…as good and true as any officer in the Confederate service…send me in the letter to go by flag of truce 5 cts in silver. I can't get the U. S. stamps except with silver and their authorities charge me 5 cts…". VG
