Confederate Autograph Letter Signed by W. H. McRae, 2pp. folio, Endor Iron Works, June 7, 1864, addressed to Colonel John C. McRae, of Wilmington, North Carolina, with matching cover bearing Confederate postal markings. With good business content pertaining to the large smelting furnance that provided iron from 1862-65 for the Confederate war machine, and its acquisition by private local businessmen. It reads in part: “...The charge for taxes is correct...The Endor Company has nearly wound up its affairs, your a/c is now about right...Dow is of the opinion that you are some what overdrawn, I think not but as stated above the reclamation on the part of the Company if any will be small. The new company have not done much, they are almost entirely out of feed for stock and have been feeding mules, negroes and all on the flour for about one month. They started the Furnance on Monday last and before Saturday, were chilled up, the chill was taken out withou any serious damage to the hearth and they expect to blow in a few days. Nearly all the iron they had made by the first blast was sold to Anderson to be paid for in provision or money as he thought best. One installment in the way of pay has been received being $7000...Jenkins and I had a sort of flare up yesterday which will probably result in my receiving a final discharge...” Fine condition.
