A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Corp. C. Albert Gammon [KIA while on picket duty, Petersburg Oct. 2, 64], Co. F, 17th Maine Vols., Cattlet Station, Va., Oct. 25, 1863 concerning, in part: "…the mud is over [our] shoes etc. We are expecting to fall in any moment to have a brush with the rebs. They are this side of the river & have been fighting the first corps yesterday & thare is heavy firing in the direction of Bealton Station today that is near the river. The rebs tore up about 30 miles of the railroad. They piled up the iron & built a fire in the center of the rails & heated them [and] then bent them in all shapes…it will take near a month to repair the road with all the help they can get…thare is 75 men from our Regt to work on the road. There is another draft coming off this winter…this war is a cruel one…& there is no sign of its ever coming to an end as long as thereto is a man left to fight & the South can find enough to last a long time…we never fail to find a lenity of them. They come out of the woods thick as bees…I hope we shall fall back into the fortifications of Washington…". He is erroneously identified in online sources as Albert C. Gammon.VG
