Union marine's war-date letter by Private Austin A. Hill, 4pp., 4to, with cover having indistinct naval cancel, "On board U. S. Ship Potomac," January 16, 1862, to his brother Sullivan D. Hill, Manchester, New Hampshire, in part: "We haven't got the clothes we want, most of us have no flannels and the Purser has plenty of them but won't give them out to the Marines…Some of the boys propose going to the doctor in a body and telling him that we must have flannels sold us or we must go on the sick list…I hear today that the big fleet will come by here Saturday and go to Ship island…I think that Mobile is doomed… The South Carolina has gone off somewhere to make repairs. She has been out since last May and has taken seventeen prizes, some of them very valuable ones to. I should like to have her Captain's pay when he gets home…The Commodore made an inspection of our vessel the other day and he paid the Marines a very great compliment. He said we was the best drilled body of men in the Squadron. So much for that and bully for him…There is one chap from South Bridgewater…there are several from other places near there. Some of them are first-rate fellows by they are as Irish as Pat Murphy's pigs..." Private Hill enlisted in Boston on July 18, 1861 and served four years to the day, mustering out on July 18, 1865. His postings included the U. S. S. Potomac and the U. S. S. Brooklyn. Very good. AUSTIN A. HILL was from Grantham, New Hampshire, and enlisted on July 18, 1861 in Boston and was mustered into the US Navy Marine Corps. He served on the USS Potomac and later the USS Brooklyn. He was discharged on July 18, 1865 at Washington, DC.
