A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by 16 year-old Pvt. William Howard Eastabrook [WIA & POW Chancellorsville, May 2, 1863], Co. C, 1st Mass. Vols., "Camp Hooker near Buds Ferry, M. D., March 6, 62" in part: "…father [42 year-old Pvt. William W. Eastabrook]…got the paper you sent him. We had 18 recruits come into our company yesterday…we had to build more bunks for them. The rebels have kept very quiet…today they have made noise to pay for the time they have kept still. This morning we fired a shot at them which struck in their battery which started them a little and fired back. They [fired] more than 60 shot and shell and did not do any damage…this afternoon there was two schooners went down the river and they fired at them. They did not strike them…". VG
