A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Corp. William Seed, Co. A, 23rd New Jersey Vols., on patriotic "HEADQUARTERS 23d NEW JERSEY VOLS., COL. COX" stationery showing the United States Capitol building, "Bakersville, Md., Oct. 10, 1862" in part: "…we got orders to…march to Bakersville…we marched on the 7[th] every man carrying 30 rounds of ammunition and 3 days rations...dust about 3 inches deep...many of our men fell out unable to go some are not expected to live long overcome by heat...one of our men took one of his biscuits and killed a snake by pounding him on the head with it...we came to South Mountain pass where there was such hard fighting. We passed many graves. All along the road were marks of cannon balls and many shells lay around. The trees and fences were all marked with the shot…where Hooker made his charge are many rebel graves. Some shoes are laying in the woods with the feet in them as they were shot off…we came to Boonesville another place of considerable business. It seems to be the stopping place of the government wagons…we next came to Antietam Creek the place where the Battle was fought…I saw a field of 1 acre [where] all over graves as close as can be. We are now encamped 1 mile from Barkersville 16 miles above Harpers Ferry. We are assigned to Slocum's Brigade…John Bolton wants me to run the guard with him and go up some night…while I am writing there is a lot of Reb prisoners going to the general's headquarters. I cannot learn how the[y] were captured…". VG
