A good war-date issue of the New York Herald, 8pp., New York, March 14, 1862 showing a finely engraved woodcut map of the battle of Hampton Roads on the front cover. Captioned: "The Battle of The Iron-Clad Steamers. Scene of the Great Trial Battle Between The Monitor and Merrimac, Sunday, March 9, 1862." The paths of both Ironclads are illustrated on the map to show their movements during the engagement. Likewise The USS Cumberland is shown sinking, the USS Congress is on fire and the USS Minnesota is aground. The battle related headlines includes the: "…The Monitor and Merrimac…Our Great Naval Achievement…Offical Reports of Captain Van Brunt, of the Minnesota, and Captain Watson of the Gunboat Dragon…The Rebel Account of the Fight…". With much more related content and news on troops at Manassas, hanging of a guerillas, the battle Pea Ridge, fighting near Fort Craig, New Mexico and of rebel forces poisoning well water. Overall VG to near fine.
