A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Wesley Given (1816-1870) of Sharpsburg, PA who served as a private and wagoner in the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, "3d Brigade H. Q. , [Va.], March 3, 1862", in part: "…we have been under marching orders for near a week…the 63rd went out on picket this morning…the road had improved very much…think of the soldier…making sure his cartridge box is supplies with ammunition, his haversack with provisions…his gun in good order…[March 4, 1862]…I have had a…week preparing for a march. All things are wanted in good order…the sick in the surrounding camps were…moved…to the hospitals in the cities. The balloon of this division has been operating for 2 or 3 day…near Pohick's [?]. Pickets lines being extended beyond that now, & reports say that the Rebels are very numerous in front of us…secession is shaking from center to circumference. Reports today says Old Jeff has disappeared…in keeping with H. A. Wise, J. B. Floyd & many other of the Rebel leaders. The health of the 63rd is good. Some 15 are at the hospital but all are able to wait on themselves…some of the secesh escorted in here by our scouts & pickets are much harder looking subjects…".
