A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Wesley Given (1816-1870) of Sharpsburg, PA who served as a private and wagoner in the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, Hampton, [Va.], April 3, 1862, in part: "…we are still within 3 miles of the Fort[ress] & close to the ruins of the late town of Hampton which was totally burned by the rebels…among its ruins may be seen the remains of 5 churches with their burying grounds…now without any enclosures & many of the tomb stones & monuments broken [with] a chance peach or plumb tree…now in full bloom. The place has a good…harbor which has been crowed since…with boats & vessels of all descriptions discharging…soldiers & army supplies…there is now 100,00 men here & still they come…I only fear it is too large & unwieldy…I have slept in the wagon ever since we left Camp Johnston…I have been assisting our brigade quarter master in receiving & issuing supplies since we came here…".
