A nice war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marshall P. Wood, Co. I, 9th New Hampshire Vols., "Jackson, Miss, July 18, 1863" concerning the battle of Jackson, Mississippi, in part:"…the rebels have all skedaddled from Jackson…we fought them most of the week…we only skirmished and charged them two or three times and fired a few times with artillery….our troops took possession of Jackson yesterday morn and took a lot of prisoners…our Corps will got back to the…Yazoo river…it is dreadfully hard to get water…and it is not fit for a dog to drink…we have to live on half rations…they have killed about 25 sheep…we take everything we come acrosst…the butchers…go right into a man's yard and drive his stock all away…it must be done. On our march…the Western boys would destroy most everything they came acrost…every house and out building and cotton gins they would burn…our Brigade went out the other night to skirmish….our regt lost one killed and two wounded. The one killed [Elbridge Dustin] was a fellow in Co. B. The rebs came up and jumped on him, knocked him down and made 9 bayonet holes in him. The other was in Co. H wounded. He was knocked…over the head with a gun and taken prisoner [he] got away from them…and came into our lines. The other was Capt. [Samuel J.] Alexander of Co. B wounded in the thigh. [I] do not think he will get over it [DOW 7/23/63]….I lost my haversack…I lost my plate, spoon, knife & fork…the rule is…if the boys loose any thing so is to steal another one…I saw a fellow take my canteen the other night and make off with it…I just made after him and asked him a few questions…and he gave it up…".
