A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written, on US Christian Commission stationery, by Corp. Marshall P. Wood, Co. I, 9th New Hampshire Vols., "Camp near Hancock's Station, Va., Jan. 15, 1865", in small part: "…I have had to go on picket and on guard hereat the fort…I was on guard yesterday…Jim is here today he is the same old fellow. I can hear him in the other tent a laughing…his trade is a shoe maker & saddle maker. He works on old harnesses and all such things that want mending…I expect to see a pretty hard times…there will be some dreadful hard fighting before that time…we covered ourselves up as well as we could and let it come. We had to keep on the lookout…all the time, one at a time…I had to wade most up to my knees…we have to lug our wood some ways…it takes a lot of wood to keep so many fires a going…perhaps 150,000 men all along here on these lines. It takes a good deal of grub and wood to keep them in good condition…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall near fine.
