A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written, on US Christian Commission stationery, by Corp. Marshall P. Wood, Co. I, 9th New Hampshire Vols., "Camp near Hancock's Station, Va., Jan. 22, 1865", in small part: "…there was fighting in our rear day before yesterday…the Johneys keep coming into our lines every night…there was one come in last night in front of where the 9th do[es] picket and one in the 17th Vt. I wish they would all come in and then I could come home…my arm does not look as it did when I was home. I can not reach it as I could…I red this summer's campaign…those rebs that came in last night looked rather tough. One of them was almost naked. They say that they are pretty hard up over there. Some of them are barefoot now. They told [me] how much each man drawer a day for rations. They get three quarts of…meal as flour…and two spoon full of coffee for seven days…but they will stand it as long as they can breath…they expect Genl. Thomas up in their rear and they said if he should come they are gone up…I have to go on duty twice a week…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
