A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Reese [DOD, Aug. 25, 62], Co. B, 103rd Penn. Vols., "[Washington, DC], March 4, 1862", in part: "…our regiment is now on the other side of the river opposite Washington…we had left Harrisburg Sunday morning and got to Washington Monday morning…we marched to…Camp Stanton about 25 miles from the rebels…very hills is covered with our troops around the city…there is [to be] hard fighting with the Rebels. We had great cheering in the city of Baltimore by the citizens…though it was late at night. The streets were crowded with people. They say…that the 103rd is the best regiment that has gone to the war…there is three regiments here…there is guards all over the country. You can hardly go to camp without being stopped…". VG
