A great war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. William Reese [DOD, Aug. 25, 62], Co. B, 103rd Penn. Vols., "[Camp 9 miles from Richmond, Va.], May 25, [1862]", concerning the first battle of Fair Oaks which took place nearly a week before the most famous one which took place on May 31 - June 1, 1862, in part: "…I was out skirmishing this morning though it is Sunday…we were out hunting for the enemy but did not find any. We were out from camp about 3 miles and when we came back the regiment had left…they had gone about a mile…we are encamped on the field the battle was fought yesterday there was not many killed on our side. There was 65 rebels found dead. We are near the railroad that leads from West Point to Richmond…we will soon be in that place. The rebels begin to think that they are whipped. I think so too…the Rebels has seven miles of fortifications a few miles from here…it…will not be long before we will get it for we have enough of men and artillery…they have got tired of the war. We have been chasing the rebels for three weeks. There is fine farms here…the loss of property is nothing to the loss of life this war is the cause of…". VG
