A nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Reese [DOD, Aug. 25, 62], Co. B, 103rd Penn. Vols., "Camp near the James River, July 16, 1862", in part: "…I was at the river yesterday…we are encamped in the woods with fortifications in front…we are safe from the rebels for a while. They have fell back…Burnside is to attack Fort Darling today. The gunboats has gone up the river to help to take it. The Monitor has shelled the rebels out twice since we came here but they had no land force to hold it. There is new troops coming here all the time…I do not think that the rebels will attack us here. It is a nice country around here…wheat is dead ripe. Hundreds of acres has not been cut but tramped…". VG
