Archive of six (6) letters, totaling 10pp., variously sizes 8vo. & 4to., 1857 - 1860, signed by Irish-born Catholic New York Archbishop JOHN HUGHES (1797-1864). The correspondence seeking a commission in the U. S. Regular Army for Richard Lay and is addressed to a Mrs. M. Susan Lay of Washington. Hughes plans a visit to Washington and promises to contact President Buchanan on Lay's behalf. Included are letters to Senators Douglas and Seward asking their support in the Senate confirmation of young Lay's appointment. On June 30, 1859, Lay was commissioned at 2nd lieutenant in the 3rd US Infantry and was cited for gallantry at Gettysburg in 1863. Also included are two of the original transmittal covers with one cover free franked by US Senator JAMES DIXON (1814-1873) from Connecticut. VG.
