A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marcus A. Emmons [KIA Bethesda Church, Va., June 2, 1864], Co. K, 21st Mass. Vols., "Camp near Fredericksburg, Va., Feb. 8, 1863", in part: "…we are going to No. Carolina under the command of Gen. Burnside…it is useless to carry on a winter campaign in this state where we have not only the enemy to contend with but the bad roads…and the impassable rivers protected by strong natural positions for artillery…Gen. Ferrero our Brig. Gen. is acting Division General…I have just looked up…my gaze was attracted by our Army Balloon which is up making a reconnoissance, she has been up several times today. The car below the balloon looks to me about the size of your hand. The balloon looks like a bladder when filled with wind. She is anchored to the ground by means of a rope. Since I commenced writing she has gone down…the Rebs fired a shot between the balloon and car the day of the battle when she was up. A bullet hole through her silk side would soon let out the gas etc. bringing her to the ground…he said [Sgt.] Frank Knight [31st Mass. Vols.] is dead. Frank was an enterprising young man...". VG.
