MORGAN, Edwin D. (1811-1883) was the 21st Governor of New York from 1859 to 1862 and served in the United States Senate from 1863 to 1869. He was the first and longest-serving chairman of the Republican National Committee. He was also a Union Army general during the American Civil War._ War-date Autograph Letter Signed "E.D. Morgan" 1pp. quarto, New York, December 29, 1863, addressed to Secretary of War Stanton, and reads " I have the honor to present to you Col. J. Fred Pierson [1839-1932 Bvt Brig Genl.], late Colonel of the 1st Regmt NY Vol. Col. Pierson has been requested by an influential committee in the city to proceed at once to the A[rmy of the] P[otmac] and to endeavor to induce the men now in the field to re-enlist..." Endorsed on verso by With endorsement on verso by JAMES ALLEN HARDIE(1823-1876) He served on Gen. McClellan's staff during the Peninsular and Maryland campaigns, and on the staff of Gen. Burnside in the battles around Fredericksburg. He was made judge advocate-general on Gen. Hooker's staff when that general succeeded Burnside, and for his services and conduct was made brigadier-general of volunteers...plus; War-date Letter signed by AMOS BEEBE EATON (1806-1877) Union General, as well as two others, 2pp. quarto, New York, December 29, 1863, addressed to Colonel Pierson, asking of him to convince the enlisted soldiers, who have their terms expiring to re-enlist in the New York regiments.
