A good war-date Union colonel's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Col. Clark Wright 6th Missouri Cavalry, "Head Quarters Cav. Brigade, Montgomery Plantation Bayou Vidal, [La.], April 22, 1863", in part: "…I am at present in front of our Corps we are pointing below, and on the heels of some 2000 Rebels, who are making tracks for Nachez. This country is quite under water & is infested with knatts…fleas and vermin…the country…is very rich & finely improved. Citizens [are] all gone leaving behind all their fine furniture etc which is enjoyed highly by the soldiers. The management of our troops is not satisfactory many of the best officers. Political influences have too much to do with it. The best men we have are left unnoticed to gratify some copperhead influence in some shape or other. The Lord only knows when or what the end will be. Sometimes I feel like quitting the army altogether and let it all go to the D__l…I am some 35 miles below Vixburgh on the La. side with the fair prospect of going lower…every plantation here has a fine piano left to the mercy of soldiers. If I could get one out I could take choice…". VG
