War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Serg. William Seed, Co. A, 23rd New Jersey Vols., "White Oak Church, Va., Mar. 17, 1863", in part: "…today is Saint Patricks day, clear and cold down in the wilds of Stafford County, Virginia still abides the remnants of the 23rd. I say the remnants for the [men are] dying so fast there will soon be none left. We have lost 4 out of our company during the last 2 days. Yesterday we buried two at one time…one from our company…we expect to move soon…as soon as the road would permit we expect to make tracks from this God forsaken country…some say we are going to visit that city over the river…there is…30,000 rebels crossed over and are encamped on our right 10 or 15 miles above Falmouth...I would like to meet them on a fair field…the Irish men in the army are celebrating the day…the drums were beating, guns firing and many demonstrations of joy…the boys are in high glee. Their time being so near out the[y are] counting the days…there is a prospect of a fight. The homesick get worried afraid the[y] will yet get billed. It is amusing…". VG
