War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. William Seed, Co. A, 23rd New Jersey Vols., "White Oak Church, Va., Jan. 3, 1863", in part: "…there has been many changes in our Regt. since the Battle those who showed the white feather being either discharged…resign[ed] to save their reputation. Our captain has been promoted major, Major Grubb to Lieut. Col. Our orderly serge to be 2nd Lieut of Co. G…and so on. I am looking up the ladder for another step. [Soon afterwards he was promoted sergeant to date from Dec. 1, 1862.] Coombs [the shell-shocked soldier mentioned in Seed's Christmas letter] is reduced to the ranks. It goes very hard with him…Sam…is acting Drum Major…you would laugh to see Sam stepping along putting them through their drill. He looks as though he was made on purpose for the position…our men are still sick nearly every day some die out of the Reg't....two have been taken from our Company, not expected to live…". VG
