War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Serg. William Seed, Co. A, 23rd New Jersey Vols., "White Oak Church, Va., Feb. 9, 1863", in part: "…I am ready to go where duty calls…I have made up my mind to return with the regiment if I should be spared. I am going to enlist in the 2nd Cavalry but on being promoted sergeant I thought it better to remain, though I bargained for a lieutenancy…the men are now getting furlows...nearly every week one dies out of this Reg't, 2 have died this week...there are…two of the Faulkenburg in our company. Harry was on guard on the night of our retreat after the battle of Fredricksburg he was sent by the Col. to notify the commandants of Co. to have their companies in lines as soon as possible after we crossed the river, he was missing. The next we heard of him he was at Camp Parole in Maryland. We expect…to go on picket having no idea of falling back…picketing on the line of battle is rather an unpleasant affair...the men [enemy and foe alike] are so near each other, say 20 or 25 yards they often get to firing on each other…Harry thinking to get clear staid back and Old johnny captured him and paroled him. So much for Harry's bravery in defense of his country. I will tell you of Hays one was in the battle on the Peninsula, Antietam and Sharpsburg. The other Fredricksburg. The smaller one is the hero of many battles…". VG
