A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp folio, written by a certain "Frank", Acquia Creek, Va., Jan. 15, 1863, in part: "…were you out here you would be called an abolitionist…you relate the great doings in your city and evidently are in spirit with many…but what good…is the ringing of guns, firing of guns and the other marks of jubilant feeling. A proclamation is a great thing sometimes but now what good can such a document do. The negroes know nothing of it and if they do are to indolent and dull to do anything…as far as that document goes…the country must come down to the stern hard doctrine of fight before any bright future can be seen. To think proclamations, orders etc. are of any use shows…that the person is crazy or very lazy and wants to achieve an object without working for it…an army has been in being over a year and not a victory has resulted from all its fighting…the officers and managing men have not been adequate to what the country now begins to see…to talk of peace when we are the vanquished party is worse than folly. After we have once disorganized the rebels and thwarted their plans really than we can say where the end will be…the country must lay aside every other doctrine but that of fight…then we shall be ready to listen to proclamations…people in New England states are getting rich by reason of the war and they really don't care whether it ends or not…you and others of strong sympathies may be sorry for the continnance of the war…evil days for the nation have not yet come…I wonder why you think I do not like McClellan…he is not in the army [and] it is not worth while to say anything about him…the army again is on a move…a new plan will now be tried…before Fredericksburg the rebels are busy throwing up entrenchment's…". Much more. VG
