A great war-date Union soldier's Gettysburg battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. C. Albert Gammon [KIA while on picket duty, Petersburg Oct. 2, 64], Co. F, 17th Maine Vols., Sulpher Springs, Va., Aug. 18, 1863 concerning the role they played in the Wheatfield on July 2 during the battle of Gettysburg, in part: "…last June we was up in Maryland…I am well and hearty now…it has been awful hot here for a month…I hope old england will take this in hand and knock hell out of the whole North America. It has got so damn corrupt that we cannot live in peace…we have been here one year and been in five battles…I have been in three of them but do not care about seeing another but I shall not run to avoid it. At Gayetersburg [Gettysburg] we lost 127 men [in] less than 30 minutes…it was warm work thare…to view the field after the fight was a horrid sight. Thousands of dead and wounded men, broken guns, swords, revolvers, cannon, horses and shells. Men blown to pieces in all shapes you cannot form an idea how it looks nor no one can unless they have seen it themselves…what [are the] people…doing at home…the rebellion is nearly undermined. The rebel army [is] nearly distorted and on the very point of giving up. To have…a thing…as that riot in N. Y. It is very wrong…I cannot see it…I shall reenlist for a bounty of 402 dollars…if Fort Sumter falls and our troops get South Carolina thare is but one battle to be fought and that is to take Richmond. It must and will be done and I expect to help to do it…". He is erroneously identified in online sources as Albert C. Gammon. VG.
