A nice war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. John G. Abbott, Co. D, 48th New York, [MWIA Battery Wagner July 18, 1863], Annapolis, Sunday 5th [actually Sunday Oct. 6, 1861], reading, in part: "...our whole Brigade is here, we are going on a naval expedition...there is 25,000 going with us in all 3 steamers is here now. We are in Sherman's brigade and Sherman's battery connected with it...our destination is Charleston, S.C. we will not undertake to go under the Port holes of Sumpter or Moultrie, but we will go into Charl or die fighting. We are going to a city whose walls are blacker with secessionism, than the negroes of Annapolis, which there is hardly anything else here. We will have harder fighting than though we around here…as soon as we land they will call their troops home to protect them...we went out to practice target shooting. Our board was 4 feet square and we shot 200 yds and two rounds, our first, second and third sergts never touched the board at either shot, our fourth just touched the board on one corner at the last shot...I never shot a rifle before but when I shot the ball went in the bulls eye...he next shot went about 6 inches from the center. I beat everyone that shot, there was only one shot inside of my second..." Fine condition.
