Camping on The Bull Run Battlefield A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp., 4to, written by Sgt. William H. Mickle, Co. H, 134th New York Vols. (future staff officer for chief of artillery 11th & 20th Corps and captain of Co. B), "Headquarters 134th Regt. N.Y.S.V., [n. d., but Nov. 1862] Germantown Va," in part: "…You have probably heard of my sickness at Fairfax…now I am entirely well with the exception of a cold…About a week ago we marched from Thoroughfare Gap, back toward Fairfax…we camped on Bull Run Battle Field & during the whole night it rained incessantly…Thomas Liddell is assisting in the Hospital at Fairfax. His arm will not permit him to stay in the ranks…James Miller makes a good soldier. They used to poke fun at him…but where are his accusers to day? Sneaking around the Pond, thanking their lucky stars the Draft has been suspended…Capt. Gates is sick in Fairfax Hospital & Lieut. Herrick has command…Tell Ward: if he will come down here to live on Hardtack (army crackers) & salt junk a while, his hair will soon be hazel brown…." VG.
