A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp., 8vo, written by Lt. William H. Mickle, Co. I, 134th New York Vols. (future staff officer for chief of artillery 11th & 20th Corps and captain of Co. B), "Hope Landing, VA, March 31st, 1863," in part: "…just as my furlough was coming in I passed through the terrible ordeal of promotion to a Lieutenancy and consequently could not pass home as 1st Sergeant…how strange it seems to be called Lieut. Mickle Ha! Ha. Ha! Wearing shoulder straps & sash & mingling with Officers…You enquired with reference to our Colonel whether he was a praying man or not - I am sorry to say he is not, but one of those high minded & noble souls that would not condescend to any meanness…We do not know the point of attack as yet. Our regt. is still doing Provost Duty…We had a Grand Review yesterday & the General pronounced us the best drilled Regt. in the 11th Army Corps…" VG
