A good war-date Union officer's letter, 2pp., 8vo, written by Lt. William H. Mickle, Co. I, 134th New York Vols. (future staff officer for chief of artillery 11th & 20th Corps and captain of Co. B), "Aquia Creek, May 8th 1863," in part: "…we have been in the terrific fight across the Rappahannock & are again safely encamped & near Stafford. Doubtless ere this reaches you we will have seen more of the havoc of war. I will pen a few details as soon as possible. But a few of our boys were wounded & none killed, thank God…we could send no mail while advancing against the enemy. For nearly two weeks we were deprived of writing…Our boys are very much fatigued but feel very well. May God give us success soon & instruct us all how to live amicably. I will send my Commissions soon which I want you to frame…We have marched many a mile and have experienced some of the sad realities of Soldier life since I wrote…" VG
