A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 3pp., 4to, with postal cover, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 11th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Head Quarters Artillery, 11 Corps, Army of Cumberland, Lookout Mountain, Tenn. Nov 4th 1863," in part: "…we are on the ground our gallant boys captured last Thursday afternoon & night. During that night as out troops were soundly sleeping, about 12 a.,. the Rebs came down from Lookout Mountain & pounced upon them evidently with the intent of annihilating our entire army. But Fighting Joe Hooker the best fighting man in the army & beloved by every man under him, was equal to the emergency & soon had his men out in the darkness dealing death & terror into the ranks of the enemy: the fight lasted until 3 in the morning when our brave boys charged up the heights of a hill at the base of the mountain completely routing more than twice their number & capturing many prisoners. We now occupy the whole of the Valley & our teams will soon fill Chattanooga with supplies enough for a long siege & then the Rebs may bring their entire army to bear & cannot move us. Yesterday the Rebs amused themselves by throwing Shell from the pint of Lookout Mountain into our camps & wagon trains, but did us no harm. They sometimes throw from 50 to 150 per day, but all they have killed as yet is one Darkey & wounded a few soldiers. T is a waste of ammunition on their part & expensive too for each Shell costs them about $50…I presume by this time New York is raising volunteers again under the late call from 'Old Abe." I trust you will not be compelled to have another 'Draft'…". VG
