A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp., 4to, with postal cover, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 11th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Office A.A.Q.M Artillery 11th A.C. Bridgeport Ala. March 12th 1864," in part: "…I was invited with a party of Officers to go out into the country, or rather to clamber up the mountain & enjoy ourselves generally: We went, & O! what a magnificent view, we had of the surrounding country! We were elevated about (2,000) two thousand feet above the level of the Sea & could get one of the finest views of the Cumberland Mountains; look away to the east toward Dalton as far as the eye could trace; observe the serpentine course of the Tennessee as she flowed along in her majestic loveliness…Rocks, Hills, mountains and glens, all had their own particular beauties; Coal mines, shell mounds, caves of every description & imaginable formation greeted our vision…I have not heard from the Major since he was removed to Louisville but expect to soon. He keeps up good courage & is a brave as he can be. (Private or Confidential) Lieut. Freeman married about a year ago, returned to the army & after the decisive battle of Gettysburg went home again. During that time he did a little 'mischief' as the modest ladies term it & soon expected to hear stirring news from home - subject: 'Infantry.' The greatest joke connected with it, is that he was so averse to any such thing & ridiculed the idea of having a 'little one' for years after he was married; he was caught most assuredly & was mortified extremely when he heard from his wife of his sad mistake; but when he went home this winter he found that it had occurred; of course he jokes now a little & asks me sometimes if I want any advice…" VG.
