A good war-date Union officer's letter, 6pp. on "Office Chief of Artillery, 20th Corps" letterhead, 8vo, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 20th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Lookout Valley, May 3rd 1864," in part: "…How vividly do I remember one year ago today. 'twas the scene of Bloody Chancellorsville that then greeted my vision & the thunder of Artillery. The general noise of desperate conflict & deadly strife rose in confusion from all sides. O! that memorable - sadly memorable 3rd of May 1863!! I never think of it without a shudder. I presume my Dear that we shall soon go in search of Jonnies again…The boys is moving now & we shall doubtless move our Hd. Qrs. In a day or two. I think the entre Army will make a movement. The Potomac, Army of Cumberland and all move at once….The boys of the 134th are well. Geo Payne has been recommended by that Examining Board for a 1st Lieutenancy in Colored Regt. I hope Old Abe will appoint him. Keep it cool as yet…My Qr. Mr. dept is doing tolerably well…I will enclose the photo of Capt Stewart a Qr. Mr. of my association here. He is a fine man & a good officer. I presume your album is filling up slowly…I will send that fine old corps badge in a little box with to day's mail also…Genl Sickles is visiting Genl Hooker to day. He lost one leg at Gettysburg…" VG
