A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 4pp. on "Office of Chief Commissary 20th Army Corps" letterhead, 8vo, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 20th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Near Marietta Ga, June 23, 1864," in part: "…Our lines are near the enemy's but not much firing in front of the 20th. On the left of our line in Genl Howard's front I hear very heavy cannonading but hope we may have a little rest to day. We have been marching & fighting for about 60 sixty days…here we have but the sterner features of war. Yes, War! & such as the world has never known till the disruption of the U.S.A…I presume our future movements will depend on the success of the Potomac Army & by this time we feel assured that Grant has gotten Lee in a trap especially if he has captured Petersburg Va. Then we can seize Lee & capture most if not all his gallant army…" VG.
