A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 4pp. on "Office Commissary of Musters, 20th Army Corps" letterhead, 4to, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 20th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Near Marietta, Ga June 26th 1864," in part: "…I have begun a letter to Mrs. Payne…which I'll try & finish to day & then must write one to Mrs. Wheeler the mother of the brave & gallant Capt Wm Wheeler [13th New York Artillery battery commander], shot through the heart on the 22nd inst. Near Marietta Ga, I had learned to love him as a brother & admire the peculiar & superior qualifications with which he was gifted…Truly we are passing through a severe ordeal, as a nation and people…We are hopeful Genl Grant may destroy Lee's army & this break the power of the Rebellion…". Wheeler was killed instantly by small arms fire while sighting his battery's fire at the battle of Kolb's Farm, Kennesaw Mountain June 22, 1864.VG
