A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 2pp. on "Office Commissary of Musters, 20th Army Corps" letterhead, 4to, with postal cover, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 20th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Near Marietta, Ga June 28th 1864," in part: "As I learned this morning that there was a good prospect of our going out on a ten days expedition (I presume to flank the Johnnies out of their strong fortifications here), I hastened to write you a note…yesterday we had a hard fight. The artillery was hotly engaged, but I presume it will save many precious lives to flank the enemy & not charge their works constantly…our duties are laborious but we are cheerful & confident of success. Gen; Grant has had some more hard fighting but we think he will eventually accomplish all we have hoped for. The boys are well in the 134th and laboring cheerfully…" VG.
