A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp., 4to, with postal cover, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 20th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Ordnance Office, 20th Corps, In the Field, near Marietta, Ga. July 1st 1864," in part: "…Reports of all kinds are required (for) ammunition trains, Division & Corps Supply trains. Artillery & Infantry are moving about us in a constant crowd making a confused jumble. Along our front an occasional Sharpshooter distinguishes himself by killing or wounding 'his man,' as he terms it & not infrequently the booming cannon rears from its masked position breaking the dull monotony of the scene. One year ago today I was en route for the famous Battle field at Gettysburg. Long long will that day's labor be impressed upon my mind. Then the two succeeding days of carnage that secured to us the victory of that hotly contested battle & drove the 'Rebel crew' back into Virginia with their decimated ranks…How shall we celebrate this 4th of July, rejoicing over victories won during this campaign or nearly in our grasp? I think we should 'thank God & take courage' for the prospect is bright & a speedy success surely will be ours…" VG.
