A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp., 8vo, written by staff officer for chief of artillery 20th Corps Lt. William H. Mickle, 134th New York Vols. (future captain of Co. B), "Ordnance Office 20th Corps, Chattahoochie River, July 12, 1864," in part: "…Yesterday I went to Marietta had a picture taken in very rough appearance which I will send to you at my earliest convenience. It looks rough just as I was when it was taken but I thought you would prize it the more for having come from the far off land of 'Dixey.' I also purchased some military pictures…Our armies are still working & progressing although a party of Rebels are making a demonstration toward Penna. again. Let them go if they get as far as N. Y. City & give the Copperheads a taste of war. It would be a blessing to the general Government. I hope Grant will not let it affect his movements any…We are moving across the Chattahoochie with our army & probably our Corps will cross to day or tomorrow. Then the doomed city of Atlanta will be very soon in our possession and if Johnston is foolish enough to remain in it to defend it his capture will only be a question of time. Our troops are in fine spirits, well fed & clad. Genl Hooker is the same gallant & beloved Genl as ever. His boys idolize him more & more daily. I shall try to get his photo soon & I want it put first in your Album of military men. Grant next. Thomas next, then Rosecrans, Genl Howard &c…" VG
