A good war-date Union officer's document, 1 1/4pp. 4to., being General Orders No. 39 issued by departing Lt. Col. [future brevet brig. gen.] Daniel F. Griffin, 38th Indiana Vols. Kingston, Ga., Nov. 8, 1864 congratulating his men for their service to the country up to that date and announcing that he was leaving them, in part: "Officers and soldiers of the 38th I'm taking leave of you. I cannot but express thanks for…your behavior and general good conduct in camp and on the field…let your future deeds but equal your illustrious past…and your names will live on…let your starry Banner so often carried in triumph through every strife-be raised still higher than the battlements of a Joneboro. To the officers I have been indebted…to the brave boys everything is due to their valor…remember…you have a leader in the commander of Joneboro's gallant skirmish line [Lt. David H. Patton, Co. H]. May victory crown your every effort…and [a] peaceful Nation bless your devotion to its flag…". The 38th Indiana entered United States service in September 1861. They fought gallantly throughout the war losing most men at the battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga and Joneboro, Georgia. Near fine.
