Original Union manuscript Special orders No. 44 issued "BY THE COMMAND OF LIEUT. GENL. GRANT" DATED June 30, 1864 "HEADQUARTERS, ARMIES OF THE UNITED STATES," at City Point, Virginia. Detailed instructions directing Commissary Officers to provide rations to "OFFICERS OF THE ARMIES OPERATING FROM THE JAMES RIVER" in view of the difficulty encountered by officers to procure private provisions.Fine original Union document signed by CAPTAIN FRANK E. MARBLE as Assistant Adjutant General. Marble was commissioned September 9, 1861 as a Lieutenant in Company G of the US Volunteers 1st Sharpshooters (the famed "Berdan's Sharpshooters"), and was promoted to Captain on July 29, 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. He rejoined his regiment and served in the Army of the Potomac until the Berdan Sharpshooters were mustered out of Federal Service September 22, 1864. Fine original Civil War document from the HEADQUARTERS OF GENERAL GRANT AT CITY POINT during the overland campaign of 1864. Lincoln appointed Grant to command all Union Armies in the field and Grant located his own headquarters with the ARMY OF THE POTOMAC as during the final campaigns of the Civil War.
